Although I have posted this picture on Facebook, I wanted to share it here in my blog too. I found this little sticky note on my main door which says, "Always Smile" in Armenian. It's just a piece of paper, two words from a random stranger, but it had a tremendous impact on me. It made my day brighter, more beautiful, and more productive. I didn't know words can have such an influence on people. I didn't know words mean a lot. I have heard Proverbs 15.4 "Gentle words bring life and health, a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit" but I didn't know the true meaning of it. I, as an Elementary teacher , will spend most of my time with kids. I'm sure every single word that comes out of my mouth will matter. Education isn't only explanation of the subject matter, evaluation of student's performance, or exhibition of how much the teacher knows, but also helping students feel welcomed, cared for, and loved. for me, Teaching is a humanistic profession. Education is not only hard work, it is heart work as well. Moreover, teaching affects learning. Novice teachers like me sometimes stress a lot on content and curriculum that we almost forget about this sacred aspect. I know there are many factors that make a teacher an effective one. However, my advice for teachers out there is, be the teacher who changes lives, encourages, cares, understands, loves, protects, welcomes, and sacrifices. If those two words changed me, Imagine what your words are capable of. choose them wisely.
