What Doesn’t Kill You Makes You Stronger
We as human
beings cannot survive without setting goals or at least without having
something in mind. This process is obvious from the early stage of our lives.
Let me give you an example, during birthday parties, children are asked what do
they want to become when they grow up and no one answers, "nothing". Everyone gives different answers such as, a
batman, a policeman, a dinosaur…etc. The interesting part is that they do
effort to fulfill their dreams though most of them aren’t real. But this doesn’t
mean their dreams are going to be ignored. As teachers, we have to find
out their strengths and motivate them. When they grow up, they will set
realistic goals for themselves.
I, gladly,
want to share my experience with you. As a kid, when I was asked what do I want
to become, my answer was “I want to become a teacher” though I didn’t know what
teaching was. I had this dream for as long as I remember myself. However, I had shyness as one of my personality characteristics. I was too shy to express myself. I was mocked by one of my
teachers. she used to call me “a tomato” since every time she used to ask me to
stand up and recite my lesson I used to blush. She told me that I cannot express myself
and by doing so it’s impossible to become a teacher. My friends, influenced by her, used
to call me names and ignore me because I was different than them.
But let me
tell you something (keep it in mind) don’t listen to negative people,
they have problem for every solution. Their words really affected my self-confidence
but what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Their words didn’t kill my dreams
and ambitions, but they made them even stronger. I changed myself completely
the day I was informed that my essay writing is going to be posted in the school’s
yearbook. I was in grade 12 and my essay was about “love”. I wrote about the
love that I really needed from my teacher and friends. My English teacher motivated me. He made me believe in myself so I decided to become an English teacher.
Now that I've become an elementary school teacher, I don't know if one of my dreams came true, I was meant to be, or I wanted to prove my teacher and friends that I can, but all I know is that I love my profession. I won't treat my students the way I was treated. I believe I'm here to change their lives, to fill their minds with positive thoughts, and to make them feel loved and cared for. Don't let anyone tell you what you cannot do.
